UWF to host Emerald Coast BEST robotics competition

WHAT: The 2016 Emerald Coast BEST robotics competition will be held at the University of West Florida Field House on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016. BEST is a project-based STEM program in which students learn to analyze and solve problems utilizing the engineering design process. The mission of BEST is to inspire middle and high school students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics through participation in a sport-like, science- and engineering-based competition.

Sam Russel, program manager and instructor in the UWF Department of Engineering, leads the event’s steering committee and is the hub director for Emerald Coast BEST. Sponsors for the 2016 competition include AT&T; Gulf Power; International Paper; American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers Northwest Florida Chapter; and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. More than 50 volunteers will help with the competition.

The competition includes 23 schools from all five counties in the Emerald Coast region.

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016

TIME: The competition will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be immediately followed by an awards ceremony.
