UWF Open House gives prospective students first-hand look at campus

The University of West Florida hosts four Open House events throughout the year, one each in October, November, January and February. The events draw large numbers of students and their parents from the region, and invite them to browse information on prospective majors, gather information about university clubs and events, tour housing facilities, as well as meet with faculty and staff and glean valuable information about UWF.

Attendance has increased each year and Admissions expects this trend to continue. Last year, nearly 2,000 guests visited the campus.

“Attendance consistently increases,” said Andrew Telatovich, associate director in the Office of Admissions. “We’ve had to change locations several times to accommodate everyone.”

The Open House begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturdays with a registration and information fair and quickly moves into campus, major and housing tours. This allows the students to become familiar with the university as a whole, as well as take part in a more specialized tour of their major of choice.

Prospective students are treated to a complimentary lunch, and then ushered into the Office of Admissions where they can pick up admission and transfer forms and meet counselors.

“It’s a great opportunity to see the campus as a student would see campus,” said Telatovich. “They visit all the main areas and become familiar with student life.”

Starting in January, the tour will include optional housing contracts and information on financial aid.

The Office of Admissions selectively targets high school students based on ACT/SAT scores and invites them to tour campus and become acclimated with UWF life before deciding on a higher education institution.

“We feel Open House programs are one of the best ways to get a feel for what we’re all about,” said Telatovich. “Students get to know the faculty and staff, become comfortable with the campus layout and have their questions answered.”
