Message from the President: Derek Chauvin Verdict

We recognize that over the past few weeks, many members of our University community have felt a mix of emotions awaiting the outcome of the trial of Derek Chauvin. The guilty verdict does not make up for George Floyd’s murder or the feelings of anguish, fear and frustration felt by so many of us in this country. But we should not give up hope.

Let us continue to do what we can, where we can, to make life better for our community, our state and our country.  Let’s keep engaging in meaningful dialogue, taking collaborative action and consistently working toward a supportive and inclusive campus and community. There is still much work to be done, but together we can do our part toward a more fair and just society.

At the University of West Florida, we recognize that some of our greatest learning comes in times of greatest difficulty. Now is the time for all of us to share empathy and understanding as a united Argo Nation.

Please remember that there are a number of resources available to our campus community:

Students seeking support are encouraged to contact Counseling and Psychological Services at 850.474.2420 and press option 6 to be immediately connected to a counselor 24/7. Employees should contact the Employee Assistance Program at 1.800.272.7252.

Sincerely Yours,

Martha D. Saunders
