UWF Recreation provides UWF community with engagement options

State-of-the-art fitness facilities remain closed as the University of West Florida navigates unprecedented challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Department of Recreation is providing the UWF community with virtual fitness and wellness classes, as well as ways to stay engaged with a simple touch of a screen or click of a mouse.

“Being physically active has a positive impact on mental health,” said Brent Parmer, director of Recreation. “We find all aspects of wellness as being equally important. We will be working with Counseling and Psychological Services to provide mindful exercises, including live meditations. We will also be promoting a variety of wellness tips to help keep Argos safe, healthy and active during this time.”

Recreation is hosting Facebook and Instagram Live workouts and posting home workouts on its Facebook page. The videos last anywhere from a few seconds to 30 minutes, depending on the workout. Workouts include leg challenges, plank challenges and full body. No exercise equipment is required. Recreation provides instructions, detailing the exercises, the number of sets and repetitions, along with a reminder to properly warmup and cool down.

The department is keeping the UWF community engaged in healthy competition, virtual-style, with an open call for the best trick shot. Recreation is asking students, faculty or staff to record their best trick shot and tag @uwfrec on social media or email their video. For those who prefer to engage in sports-related activities without breaking a sweat, Recreation offers an ESports League in which participants play FIFA 20, Madden 20 and NBA 2K20.

“We are excited to provide opportunities for the UWF community to participate in some friendly competition while at home,” said Jessica Coleman, assistant director of competitive sports. “Keep playing, interacting and communicating with your fellow Argos!”

UWF Recreation includes a comprehensive array of programs, facilities and services that engage participants, promote health and wellness, and provide diverse learning and development opportunities.
