Florida Science Olympiad is an official state chapter of Science Olympiad, Inc. The goal of Science Olympiad and the Northwest Regional competition is to improve the quality of science education through competitions similar to sporting events. Students competed as a team in 16 different events that range the spectrum of science subjects. Science Olympiad is a way to motivate students who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
This year, High School (Division C) and Middle School (Division B) students competed in the divisional events: eight events in each division. The top five Division C teams and the top six Division B teams will participate in the state competition.
The Olympiad is the only science competition listed in the national standards as an exemplary implementation of inquiry and assessment.
The Northwest Regional competition was first held at UWF in 2012 and offers events that cater to middle and high school teams.
University of West Florida faculty and staff, including Science Olympiad Regional Director, Paige D. Livermore and Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, Dr. Eman El-Sheikh coordinated the planning of the competition.
