UWF, Early Learning Coalition to host award-winning author at Literacy Symposium
The University of West Florida, in partnership with the Early Learning Coalition of Escambia County, will host the Pensacola Literacy Symposium: See the Beauty in Books from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 at the UWF Conference Center. The UWF College of Education and Professional Studies event will feature Matt de la Peña, 2016 Newbery Award Winner for Literature, as its keynote speaker.
De la Peña is the New York Times bestselling author of six young adult novels: “Ball Don’t Lie;” “Mexican Whiteboy;” “We Were Here;” “I Will Save You;” “The Living;” and “The Hunted.’ He also authored critically acclaimed picture books “A Nation’s Hope: The Story of Boxing Legend Joe Louis” and “Last Stop on Market Street,” which earned the Newbery Award. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of the Pacific and a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from San Diego State University. De la Peña currently lives in Brooklyn, New York and teaches creative writing.
In addition to the keynote address, the symposium will feature two professional development sessions. Registration is $20 and seats are limited.
