UWF Department of Theatre presents “Dearly Departed”

The University of West Florida Department of Theatre presents “Dearly Departed,” a play by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones. Performances will be held April 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. and April 7 and 14 at 2:30 p.m. All performances will take place in the Studio Theatre of the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82, on the UWF Pensacola campus.

In the backwoods of the Bible Belt, the beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpins’ additional problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion. Firstborn Ray-Bud drinks himself silly as the funeral bills mount; Junior, the younger son, is juggling financial ruin, a pack of no-neck monster kids, and a wife who suspects him of infidelity in the family car; their spinster sister, Delightful copes with death by devouring junk food; and all the neighbors share more than their two cents. Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort from their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need.

Director Marci Duncan leads the creative team consisting of UWF students Katrina Lundquist, costume designer; Maranda Straub, set designer; Jennifer Cullen, lighting designer; and Joshua Heming, sound designer.

Ticket prices are $18 for adults, $14 for senior citizens and active military, $12 for non-UWF students and UWF faculty and staff and $7 for high school students. UWF students are admitted free with their Nautilus cards. Tickets can be purchased at the CFPA Box Office, building 82 or by calling 850.857.6285 or online at uwf.edu/tickets. Due to the seating arrangement in this space, audience members who arrive late will not be seated until intermission.
