UWF to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during Diversity Week

The University of West Florida (UWF) is hosting its first Diversity Week Tuesday, Jan. 15 through Saturday, Jan. 19. The UWF Black Employees Association (BEA), Student Government Association (SGA), Student Activities and Office of Diversity have planned events throughout the week as a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the campus community’s commitment to service and understanding.

One of the week’s featured events is the keynote address, presented by Rev. Dr. Bernard Lafayette Jr. on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. in the University Commons. Rev. Dr. Lafayette, a civil rights activist, minister and author, will speak on “Peace and Social Justice: The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.”

The Martin Luther King Day of Service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day’s events will include service opportunities at various locations in Pensacola, such as the Salt Marsh Restoration, Salvation Army and Play Pensacola. To sign up for the Day of Service, UWF students, faculty and staff can login to JasonQuest through my.uwf.edu or uwf.edu/career, and then select the event under “Volunteer and Service Opportunities.”

Following the service projects, a “Celebration of Diversity” panel discussion and performances will be held at the UWF Commons Conference Center from 2 to 4 p.m.

These events are sponsored by the John C. Pace Jr. Symposium Series.

All events are free and open to the public. For additional information and the full schedule of events for Diversity Week, visit uwf.edu/bea/mlk2013.
