Naval officer to address UWF students and mentors regarding human resources, diversity and inclusion
The University of West Florida College of Business Executive Mentor Program will host an interactive workshop on human resources with a focus on diversity and inclusion on Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn Pensacola Airport Medical Center.
The workshop, titled, “The H in HR: Becoming Consciously Aware of What You Unconsciously Assume,” will feature guest speaker Capt. Ann Burkhardt, head of the Navy Office of Diversity and Inclusion for the Chief of Naval Personnel in Arlington, Va.
Capt. Burkhardt will facilitate a discussion among participants that will cover: how personal values are used to make decisions; how information is added or omitted based upon stereotypes, values, experiences and perceptions; and how socialization influences values, attitudes and behaviors, and how those influences relate to decision making, work place culture and relationships.

Capt. Burkhardt assumed her current duties in July 2013. She was commissioned in 1987 under the Nuclear Power Instructor Program, after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Jacksonville University. She received a master’s degree in administration from Central Michigan University.
Her awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit; Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Navy and Marine Corps Meritorious Service Medal; Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal; and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
The Executive Mentor program matches students from the College of Business with influential community business leaders who share their personal and professional experience, knowledge and skills. The one-on-one mentor relationship allows for individual attention to the student mentees’ career aspirations, professional development and networking needs. The access to local business leaders provides students with an inside track for full-time, post-graduate employment.
