Message from UWF leadership

Blue overlay of the archway on campus with Presidential seal

Argo Family,

Like so many of you, our hearts are heavy because of recent events in our country. The senseless deaths of African Americans and the mistreatment of people of color shine a light on deeply rooted racial inequity that continues to plague our communities and our world. Our levels of stress, anger and fear have been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. We wish we had a remedy for the pain that is settling in on so many.

Argos, now is the time for us to come together as a supportive community willing to listen and speak about our differences. Let’s help one another be more understanding. The only way our society can change is if we take on the responsibility individually and collectively. Our actions, both big and small, CAN make an impact.

The university’s Office of Equity and Diversity will be leading us in a series of deep-dive conversations this summer for our campus community to come together to discuss and unpack our thoughts and feelings during this difficult time. These discussions will lead to relevant actions to strengthen awareness, acceptance and respect for all on our campus and beyond.

We remind UWF students, faculty and staff of the support available to you. Students who are in need of immediate help may contact Counseling and Psychological Services at 850.474.2420 and press option 6 to be immediately connected to a counselor 24/7. Employees may contact the Employee Assistance Program and 1.800.860.2058.

At the University of West Florida, we find strength in the unique individuals who make up our campus community.  As an educational institution, we also recognize that some of our greatest learning comes in times of greatest difficulty. We will work through this together.

Stay strong Argos. And most importantly, be kind to one another.

Sincerely yours,

Martha Saunders
