Dr. Grier Williams School of Music presents flutist Cheryl Star
The University of West Florida Dr. Grier Williams School of Music will present acclaimed flutist Cheryl M. Star as the featured artist for the opening concert of this year’s Music Hall Artist Series. The performance will take place on Monday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Rolfs Music Hall at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82 on UWF’s Pensacola campus.
Star’s program will feature both classical and contemporary repertoire, performed on flute and alto flute, and will include guest artists on oboe and bongos. The concert will showcase the flute’s technical and expressive range, offering audiences a dynamic listening experience that extends beyond traditional standards.
Star’s skills were shaped by studying with notable flutists including Julius Baker, Trevor Wye and James Galway, and she has passed these skills on to many students over her decades-long teaching career. Star currently serves as adjunct professor of flute at Young Harris College in Young Harris, Ga., a position she has held since 2009. She previously served as adjunct professor of flute and flute choir at Florida International University in Miami and has held both the presidency and vice presidency of the Florida Flute Association. She was named to the International Who’s Who in Music in 1977.
Star’s notable performances include appearing as featured soloist alongside Julius Baker at the Florida Flute Association State Convention, as featured soloist at the Florida International University Music Festival, and at the Florida Flute Association’s 50th Anniversary Gala. She has also conducted the National Flute Association Flute Choir and performed as piccolo player with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra.
General admission tickets are $22 for adults, $18 for seniors and active military, $16 for non-UWF students and UWF faculty and staff, and $9 for high school students. UWF students are admitted free with an ArgoCard. Tickets may be purchased at the CFPA Box Office, Building 82, by phone at 850-857-6285 or online at uwf.edu/cfpa.
