UWF assistant professor brings sight and hope to El Salvador through Eye Care International

Thousands of lives were changed in just two weeks, thanks to the dedication of eye care professionals and lay volunteers, including Karen Valaitis, Ed.D., assistant professor of clinical practice at the University of West Florida and chair of the board for Eye Care International. As a member of the leadership team, she participated in Eye Care International’s 2025 mission to El Salvador which provided critical eye care services to 2,800 patients, restoring their eyesight and improving their quality of life.
“The opportunity first came to me around 2005, and once you experience it, you’re truly inspired,” Valaitis said. “The impact goes beyond what you give — you walk away with a profound sense of gratitude and fulfillment. We work incredibly hard, but the appreciation from those we help is immeasurable. Seeing individuals regain their sight is an unforgettable experience that stays with you long after you leave El Salvador.”
For nearly three decades, Eye Care International has provided access to ophthalmology and optometry services to underserved communities in El Salvador. The non-profit’s work includes access to cataract and pterygium surgeries, prosthetic eye fittings and eyeglass prescriptions, all made possible by a passionate group of volunteers — many of whom, like Valaitis, cover their own expenses to participate.
Valaitis’ commitment to service reflects UWF’s mission to advance knowledge and improve lives through meaningful partnerships. Within the Department of Health Sciences and Administration, her work serves as a powerful example of healthcare leadership in action, inspiring students and faculty alike.
“Through her participation on the leadership team and compassionate service, Dr. Valaitis embodies the values of UWF: excellence, innovation and a commitment to making a tangible difference in the world,” said Dr. David Bellar, dean of the Usha Kundu, MD College of Health. “Her work with Eye Care International is more than just a mission — it’s a testament to the power of education, service and human connection.”
