UWF is continuing to assess damage from Hurricane Sally. A licensed drone operator will be on the Pensacola campus Saturday, Sept. 26, gathering aerial footage of buildings, nature trails and other UWF facilities.

The University is reopened; however, it is advised to take caution when traveling to UWF locations. The nature trails on UWF’s Pensacola Campus remain closed due to debris.

FALL 2020 CALENDAR ADJUSTMENT

Due to the University closure, the academic calendar will be adjusted to allow more time for coursework. December 7 through 11 will transition to regular instruction time. Instructors have the option to administer final exams during this week, if they choose to administer a comprehensive examination. All final exams and courses will end no later than Dec. 12, 2020. 

Two Friday and Saturday options will also serve as make-up days, determined necessary by each individual instructor. These dates will be communicated soon and instructors will notify students of any courses held on those two dates. 

All coursework and current deadlines should be adjusted to reflect this extended timeline. Grades remain due on Dec. 15, 2020.

EMPLOYEES

Employees and individual departments are responsible for cleaning out personal items, such as refrigerators, offices and common areas.

UWF Notice: #Sally Update #15

The University will resume operations at 5 a.m. tomorrow, Sept. 24. All courses, including online courses, will resume at this time.

Campus Environment: The University continues to clean up debris and strongly advises taking caution when traveling to and on all UWF locations.

Coursework: Students who have any issues that prevent them from resuming coursework, such as power outages or network issues, are advised to contact their instructors. We ask instructors to work with you to develop a plan of action to accommodate you and keep you on track.

Argo Pantry: Argo Pantry has extended hours of operation and will be open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24 and Friday, Sept. 25.

EMPLOYEES

Remote Employees: Remote work continues to be the primary work arrangement for faculty and staff. If the functions of a department cannot continue being accomplished remotely, or if employees cannot perform duties due to Hurricane Sally, department heads may permit up to 50% of employees to return to their work location. If a department requires more than 50% of employees to return, the department head must request approval from their appropriate division vice president. All employees must review the COVID-19 employee guidelines before returning to a UWF location.

Damage to Office or Building: If you notice any damage in your office or building, especially wetness/moisture, please take photos and contact Facilities at ext. 6000 or submit a work order through my.uwf.edu.

Water Quality: 

  • UWF is not connected to Escambia County water and runs on its own well. The ECUA boil notice does not apply to the University. University staff is constantly monitoring the drinking water quality, ensuring there are no issues. 
  • The boil water notice for the City of Gulf Breeze has been rescinded as of Sunday, Sept. 20.
  • The precautionary boil water notices issued by Pace Water System and Bagdad Garcon Point Water System have been rescinded as of Monday, Sept. 21.

Sally continues to bring wind and rain to areas as it moves inland. Historic flooding is ongoing across many locations. Tropical-storm-force winds are expected to end between 5-10 p.m. 

Dining Services has prepared food for residential students. Sandwiches are currently available at the Nautilus Market as of 4:30 p.m. and a spaghetti dinner will be available at 5:30 p.m. The Nautilus Market will close at 7:30 p.m. tonight and will be open again tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The University community is advised not to travel unless it is absolutely critical at this time. Essential personnel will be permitted on campus and routed to the safest path. Power remains out on campus but will be restored as soon as possible. Gulf Power cannot provide estimated restoration times. A curfew is in effect for Escambia County, including the city of Pensacola, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. for the next 72 hours.

University officials continue to closely monitor Hurricane Sally.

According to the most recent update from the National Weather Service, Hurricane Sally continues moving inland and is centered over the Alabama/Florida border with winds of 80 mph moving north-northeast at 5 mph. Hurricane-force winds are expected to end between 1-3 p.m. Tropical-storm-force winds will end between 5-10 p.m. Heavy rainfall and significant to historic flooding is ongoing across many locations.

UWF Notice: Hurricane Sally Update #4

University officials are closely monitoring Hurricane Sally, which was just downgraded from a category 2 to a category 1 hurricane and continues to move over Northwest Florida.

According to the most recent update from the National Weather Service, there has been significant storm surge and flooding.

There has been no major damage reported at UWF locations at this time. Power is out on the Pensacola campus and will be restored as soon as possible. There are three trees down and the east entrance to campus is blocked with an emergency vehicle. There is minor leaking in the Village apartments and those residents have been moved to new locations. Housing staff and residence assistance are on site and available for students. No injuries have been reported. Poor cell reception is widespread across the impacted area.

UWF Notice: Hurricane Sally Update #3

University officials are closely monitoring Hurricane Sally, which is currently a category 1 hurricane and forecast to make landfall along the coast of Mississippi early Tuesday. 

According to the most recent update from the National Weather Service, local impacts include a potentially long duration of excessive rain and significant, potentially historic, life-threatening flash flooding. A Flash Flood Watch is currently in effect. Tropical-storm-force winds (57-65 mph) are possible in Northwest Florida early Tuesday morning and continuing into Thursday morning. Tornadoes are also possible beginning Monday night through Wednesday. 

The University will be closed starting at 12 a.m. (midnight) on Tuesday, Sept. 15 through 11:59 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020. 

  • All courses, including online courses, are cancelled. All assignments, exams, virtual and in-person courses must be suspended during this time. 
  • All virtual or in-person meetings, activities and services are suspended during this time. 
  • Essential employees must report to work, as assigned. If you are essential personnel and required to report to work, your supervisor will notify you. 

The University will resume operations at 12 p.m. (noon) on Thursday, Sept. 17 unless otherwise notified by the University.  

Residential Students: When storm/hurricane conditions are expected in the Pensacola area, UWF residential students may be directed to either shelter in place or evacuate to the on-campus ride-out facility. A decision regarding student evacuation to the ride-out facility will be made as the storm progresses and communicated in a timely manner to residential students. Dining Services will work with Housing and Residence Life on facilitating dining options during the closure. Office Preparations: Employees are asked to prepare work areas for the storm before departing today. If employees are working remotely, supervisors or building emergency coordinators should prepare work areas.  

  • Unplug computers and other sensitive electronic equipment, if possible. If you need to remote into your computer, it can stay powered on. The monitors can be turned off.
  • Ensure that you have taken all computer equipment off the floor (such as towers, monitors, battery backups and power strips), and placed them on higher ground.
  • Loosely cover computer equipment that is turned off and unplugged with heavy weight plastic sheeting (see your building emergency coordinator). 
  • Close your window blinds to help stop potential debris from entering offices.
  • Consult with your building emergency coordinator for details and further instructions.

UWF Notice: Tropical Storm Sally Update #2

Due to the threat of severe weather in Northwest Florida from Tropical Storm Sally, all in-person courses will be either cancelled or offered remotely from noon on Monday, Sept. 14 through Tuesday, Sept. 15. Faculty should communicate directly with students regarding cancellation or remote format for in-person courses. 

All in-person courses scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 14 will be offered as regularly scheduled unless otherwise notified by your instructor. 

The Emerald Coast location in Fort Walton Beach is closed on Monday, Sept. 14. Services will be available remotely. 

Employees should communicate with supervisors regarding reporting in-person to a UWF location.

UWF Notice: Monitoring Tropical Storm Sally

University officials are closely monitoring Tropical Storm Sally, which is currently heading toward the central Gulf Coast from southeast Louisiana to coastal Mississippi. All University of West Florida locations remain operational at this time. If conditions change, the University will update the campus community.

According to the most recent update from the National Weather Service, the path of Tropical Storm Sally is expected to strengthen to a hurricane prior to making landfall near southeast Louisiana to coastal Mississippi on Tuesday.

A Tropical Storm Warning for coastal areas and a Flash Flood Watch are currently in effect for the Northwest Florida area. At this time, local impacts include a potentially long duration of excessive rain which could lead to flooding.

Online Courses: Online courses remain fully operational at this time. However, if you are participating in online courses from a location that is affected by Tropical Storm Sally, please contact your instructors as soon as possible to let them know of your situation and that you will connect back with them as soon as you can safely do so.
