UWF Historic Trust to host presentation by storyteller Appleyard

The University of West Florida Historic Trust will host “Life and Living in Pensacola’s Historic District 1885-1900” by Dr. John Appleyard at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Voices of Pensacola presented by Gulf Power.

“The period of 1885-1900 was a time of incredible changes for Pensacola’s residents,” Appleyard said. “Back when utilities were first installed, streetcars arrived and a few streets were paved. It was a good time to live downtown.”

The public is invited to the free event. Light refreshments will be served before the presentation at 9 a.m.

One of the region’s foremost storytellers and founder of the John Appleyard Agency, Appleyard has published in excess of 100 books, including histories of prominent local families, novels and non-fiction works detailing the area’s rich history and a series of 100-plus mysteries.

Appleyard was presented an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by UWF at the Fall 2016 Commencement in honor of his commitment to preserving the history of Pensacola and Northwest Florida. Videos of his stories of Pensacola are included in the Appleyard Storytelling Cottage in Historic Pensacola. The cottage is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday in downtown Pensacola, 117 E. Government St. For more information, visit www.historicPensacola.org.
