UWF Statistics professor named 2015 American Statistical Association fellow

Dr. Subhash Bagui, professor of mathematics and statistics, has been selected as a fellow of the American Statistical Association for his contributions to the statistical profession.

“This is a tremendous recognition of my work and contribution to statistical sciences and statistical profession from the highest body of statistics,” Bagui said. “This prestigious recognition from ASA is a great honor for me.”

Bagui has published more than 60 peer review journal articles, including his distinguished research in the area of nonparametric classification and discrimination, which has numerous real-world applications in pattern recognition, including tumor detection and artificial intelligence. His research, teaching and promotion of statistics to non-statisticians led to his nomination. Bagui also has held service and leadership roles within the Florida chapter of the ASA.

Dr. Jaromy Kuhl, chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, said that this is a notable accomplishment for Dr. Bagui and UWF.

“If you look through past recipients, only a small number of fellows are from regional comprehensive universities such as ours. This is a tremendous achievement for Dr. Bagui,” Kuhl said.

Each year, only one-third of one percent of ASA members are selected as fellows.

“This will be a bragging point for UWF and the department to recruit high quality faculty and students,” Bagui said. “Faculty and researchers in other research institutions will also realize that great work is being done at UWF. This award is a celebration for UWF.”

Bagui and this year’s ASA fellows will be honored with an awards ceremony at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Seattle, Washington, on August 11, 2015.
