UWF Historic Trust launches Art of the Highwaymen exhibit during Foo Foo Fest
University of West Florida Historic Trust will present “Against the Odds: The Art of the Highwaymen,” a traveling exhibit, from Nov. 6 to Dec. 28 at the Voices of Pensacola presented by Gulf Power. The exhibit is part of the 2014 Pensacola Foo Foo Fest, a 12-day eclectic mixture of art and culture events that will take place Nov. 6 to 17.
The Florida Highwaymen were a group of 26 African-Americans who broke convention to paint beautiful iconic landscapes on basic materials, such as Upson board and crown molding, in the segregated South during the mid-1950s and 1960s. Collectively, they produced more than 200,000 paintings over a 30-year period.
Historic Trust will host an opening reception that is free and open to the public for the exhibit on Friday, Nov. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.
On Dec. 5, Historic Trust will also host guest speaker Gary Monroe, author of “The Highwaymen: Florida’s African-American Landscape Painters.” The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by Monroe’s lecture at 6 p.m.
The “Against the Odds: The Art of the Highwaymen” exhibit is free and open to the public. The Voices of Pensacola hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
