The University of West Florida Department of Music will present the Runge Strings Orchestra in “Bastien and Bastienne” with the Chamber Music class at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5. The performance will be held in the Music Hall at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82.

In their first performance of the semester, the Runge Strings Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Leonid Yanovskiy, will present Mozart’s “Bastien and Bastienne.” Dr. Hedi Salanki-Rubardt’s Chamber Music class will join in the performance. Dr. Boyan Bonev will conduct.

“Bastien and Bastienne” was one of Mozart’s earliest operas, written in 1768 when he was only 12 years old. In this comic opera, Bastienne loves Bastien but believes he has abandoned her for a rich girl. Colas advises her to pretend to reject Bastien so that he will become jealous. Colas then tells Bastien that Bastienne has other lovers, but Bastien has no other lovers but Bastienne. Colas reads nonsense words from his book of magic, telling Bastien that it is a spell to win back Bastienne’s love. Bastienne teases Bastien a bit, but eventually the lovers are reconciled.

The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. For more information or to reserve tickets, contact the CFPA Box Office at 850.857.6285.
