Piece by UWF art director featured in regional competition

A University of West Florida faculty member is currently being featured in the Red Clay Survey art exhibit at the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville, Ala. Work in this prestigious biennial competition is chosen by a juror with strong national credentials and is designed to “take the pulse” of contemporary Southern art.

“Lone Birch,” a painting by John Markowitz, program director for the UWF Department of Art, was one of 90 works chosen from more than 1,500 entries. The painting is part of his Pinebrook Series, an ongoing investigation of the landscape motif.

“Much of the imagery in this series of paintings comes from observing a grove of trees on my property in Cantonment, but it’s also the result of an accumulation of memories of nature that I’ve ‘collected’ since childhood,” Markowitz said.

The Red Clay Survey exhibit will be displayed Aug. 17 – Oct. 26, 2014 at the Huntsville Museum of Art, located in Big Spring International Park in downtown Huntsville.
