UWF welcomes first class of Pensacola Pledge Scholars
This fall, the University of West Florida (UWF) and Pensacola State College (PSC) welcomed 35 Pensacola Pledge Scholars, amounting to approximately $60,000 in scholarship awards. Out of these students, 24 freshmen are currently enrolled at UWF.
The 2012 UWF Pledge Scholars include: Haley Anderson, Andre Bordelon, Jonathan Brannan, Jackson Buckley, Brett Calkins, Alexa Carter, Phillip Dugger, Darian Feysa, Sophie Irwin, Lakeyah Johnson, Deforest Jones, Latesa Jones, Tanya Jones, Tucker Massey, Emily Mixson, Layla Navidi, Lyndon Parmer, Elizabeth Quina, Rachael Robinson, Mary Tempesta, Annie Thomas and Timothy Tittel.*
“I feel extremely proud to have received this scholarship, as I have lived in Pensacola my entire life,” said Alexa Carter, 2012 Pensacola Pledge Scholars recipient and UWF student. “When I visited the UWF campus for the first time, I felt right at home. All of my questions were answered immediately and the staff’s personal attention was clearly a priority.”
Quint and Rishy Studer established the Pensacola Pledge Scholars program earlier this year to provide local high school graduates the opportunity to earn a scholarship in order to obtain a college degree. The program awards eligible recipients $2,000 per academic year to attend UWF, and $1,200 to attend PSC. The Studers also recognized the Pensacola Pledge Scholars last month at a Blue Wahoos game.
“As a result of this generous gift on behalf of Quint and Rishy Studer, students will have more opportunity to pursue higher education and additional incentive to achieve success while in school,” said UWF Vice President of University Advancement, Kyle Marrero. “Having the pleasure of meeting some of the recipients, it is evident that the Studers’ gift is making an impact directly to the students and our community.”
Students interested in applying for the Pensacola Pledge Scholars program for the 2013 academic year must reside within Pensacola city limits and graduate from an Escambia County public high school the same year as college entrance. To apply, students must submit an application, two letters of recommendation and a 500-word essay on “What being a citizen of Pensacola means to me” by April 1, 2013.
