University of West Florida professor Dr. Muhammad H. Rashid was recently awarded the 2013 Outstanding Achievement Award from the Industry Application Society, adding to the continued success of the UWF Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Recently, two student teams –advised by Rashid – placed first and second in the Myron Zucker Undergraduate Student Design Contest, a prestigious international competition sponsored by the Industry Application Society.

As a special interest society within the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Industry Applications Society presents several society-level awards throughout the year, including the Myron Zucker Undergraduate Student Design Awards and the Outstanding Achievement Award. The latter serves to honor an individual who has made an outstanding contribution in the application of electricity to industry in accordance with the scope of the society.

The Outstanding Achievement Award includes an engraved statuette and a cash prize of $5,000. It will be presented during the Presidents Banquet at the IAS annual meeting, held Oct. 6-11 in Orlando, Fla. The student teams will also be recognized and presented their awards at the annual meeting.

Dr. Rashid is a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers – only 0.1 percent of full members are elected each year to receive the honor. He also received the 1991 IEEE Outstanding Engineer Award, the 2002 IEEE Educational Activity Meritorious Achievement Award in Continuing Education, and the 2008 IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award.  He is a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Education Society and a Regional Speaker (previously Distinguished Lecturer) for the Industrial Applications Society.

The IEEE has more than 425,000 members in more than 160 countries. For additional information about IAS, visit ias.ieee.org.
