UWF Downtown lecture series kicks off with presentation from President Judy Bense

The University of West Florida (UWF) is launching UWF Downtown: A Lecture Series Honoring the Arts and Humanities, with a presentation by President Judy Bense on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) in downtown Pensacola.
Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m., followed by Bense’s lecture, “Where’s My Shovel: Archaeological Tools and the University Presidency” at 6 p.m.
Bense served at UWF for 30 years before becoming the 5th president of the university in 2008. She founded the anthropology/archaeology program in 1980 and became the anthropology department chair in 2001. She established the Archaeology Institute in 1980 and served as its director for 20 years, authoring five books and 17 chapters in books and professional journals. She was awarded more than 75 grants and contracts totaling more than $6 million. In 2006, she founded the Florida Public Archaeology Network.
UWF Downtown is a four-part lecture series hosted by the UWF College of Arts and Sciences that promotes the value of the liberal arts in contemporary life. It showcases outstanding teacher scholars who serve the community as UWF faculty, as well as scholars of national prominence who amply illustrate the essential role of the liberal arts in building and sustaining contemporary culture. Scheduled lectures are as follows:
- Nov. 8, 2012 – Jocelyn Evans, associate professor of political science, will present “Virtually Representative?: Security, Transparency and Social Identity in the Digital Age” at the Artel Gallery, 223 Palafox Place.
- Feb. 7, 2013 – Glenn Breed, associate professor of theatre, will present “How Clothes Made the Man: My Life in Costuming” at the Pensacola Little Theatre, 400 S. Jefferson St.
- March 28, 2013 – Natasha Tretheway, U.S. poet laureate, will present “An Evening with Natasha Tretheway” at the IHMC, 40 S. Alcaniz St.
